Why A Quarter of All iPhone Consumers Switched to Android?
The recent SellCell survey on 5,000 Americans corroborates that consumer loyalty to the iOS reached an all-time hike of 91.9%. It is a 1.4% high from the last year. Alongside, users appreciate iPhone for the virtue of smartphones and the long-term support of old models with the iOS updates. 10% of survey subjects said that switching from iOS to Android is way difficult. However, a few Apple users are still switching to Android for a variety of reasons.
Previous iPhone users mentioned three major causes that pushed them for the transition to Android. The three reasons are better camera quality, screens, and longer battery life. Also, iPhone users cited that they admire the variety in models and the Customizable ecosystem of the Android OS.
In regards to brands, mostly iOS users willing to switch to Android prefer Samsung, whereas 30% choose Google Pixel phones. However, Samsung’s brand loyalty dropped from 85.7% to 74% in 2020.
When it comes to the most preferred smartphones, the iPhone 12 ranks first. The iPhone 12 Pro Max comes in 2nd place, and the third position is secured by the Samsung S21.

Is Apple Worried About this Transition?
Apple is not worried that around 26% of its consumers are switching to various Android brands. Now the question arises that why users are switching to the Android operating system? It is because Apple is focusing on pushing users to use all of its products, experts say. They further add that people are probably preferring Android smartphones just to save their money.
Internal documents presented proof of the “significant transition” of iPhone users every quarter. The internal documents were presented at the time of Apple vs. Epic’s trial. The highest rate of user transition was amid Q1 and Q2 (2020), which shows 26% of users switch to Android. This time is specifically exciting as the period generally follows the announcement and launch of the latest iPhones.
Epic said in the courtroom that App Store is monopolistic and anti-competitive, and it doesn’t let developers earn fairly. In counterstrike, Apple cited, “Epic wants us to be Android, but we don’t want to be.” Apple said that there should be a single extremely curated App Store to safeguard users’ security, privacy, and reliability.
Ben Bajarin uttered that several people estimated the users’ transition from Apple was way lesser than the users’ transition from Android. Bajarin is the CEO and principal analyst at Creative Strategies in California.
“The logic Apple was attempting to make was that people do transition,” he said. People definitely don’t switch 40% of the time but somewhere, quarterly, people do switch from iOS to Android, he added.
So Why Do People Switch?
Neil Shah told in an interview that mainly users switch because they get good deals on android phones. Shah is the vice-president of research at Counterpoint Research.
Several iPhone consumers have been staying on to their phones longer. And by the time users are willing to upgrade, the cost of flagship latest iPhones have gotten more costly. Several users who are unable to afford and get an attractive deal are prone to switch,” he said. He added that the latest OnePlus flagship is around one-third of the cost of an iPhone flagship.
Shah also described that several iPhone consumers got revamped or hand-me-downs phones. In refurbished phones, the user experience isn’t most favorable. So, when users think about an upgrade, they are most prone to switch away from the iOS ecosystem.
Shah also mentioned that there are some cases where former android users again switch back to Android. He said users who don’t get familiar with the UI and ecosystem of an iPhone switched back.
In Some cases, the user is mainly focused on using apps and doesn’t care about the phone type, Shah added.
