Media trust worldwide has decreased by 8% in 2020-21, which shows people are getting that lot of news on social media and news portals is not correct. In 2020, 29% of US adults admitted in a survey they trust news media which is a lower percentage, as 52% of American citizens stated that they regularly encounter fake news online. Millennials are reading political news on social media, and 35 percent are reading it on Facebook, which shows younger audiences are consuming news more on social media, and this new initiative by Google will surely going to help in finding the authenticity of news and information. Find out how you can detect fake news and information on Google and what other social media platforms are doing about the fake sensational information, which is making the digital space not so trustworthy for netizens.

Fake news has spread widely on the internet, which is making a lot of nuances. Many fact-checking websites constantly disclose fake news. The biggest trouble for Twitter, Facebook, and Google nowadays is fake news. The credibility of these social media is also getting down because of fake news. Companies are experimenting on how to remove fake news from the platforms and generating better mechanisms for the same.

Twitter, the microblogging platform, is strict about fake news and information. After the White House incident, Twitter suspended Donald Trump permanently, now Twitter has started labeling tweets in the name of Manipulated media on its platform, while Facebook has also come up with a number of tools that are not working at the moment, but with the emergence of fake news and information, Facebook came up with the third-party fact-checkers. Facebook deployed SimSearchNet++, an improved image matching model which is trained using self-supervised learning to match variations of an image with a very high degree of precision and better recall. Google is soon going to roll out a feature in search that will identify fake news.

Google recently talked about this feature at the I/O 2021 event. Google described it as the “about this result” feature. This feature will allow users to have the option of more sources of search results. Google is currently working on it with Wikipedia. Users will now be able to see how a website describes itself, while it will also have a Wikipedia page attached to it.

Now you can get the full details of a website on Wikipedia along with the daily latest updates. If you’ve never heard of a site, you can use this feature; that is, if you want some health and finance information, you’ll trust the website that has a Wikipedia page and how accurate this website is.

If a website does not have a Wikipedia description, Google will show users additional context, which will be Google’s first index site. Here Google will also give users information on how safe it is to visit that website.

The feature was already launched in the US in February this year. Where it is now slowly reaching out to users. You’ll first see the result in English. The company will then gradually add more languages. The feature will soon be available on Android, mobile, and desktop. Whenever it is going to be available for all, this feature will be going to grab the attention of the users widely as we’ve already stated how people are getting fake news and information daily.

Fake news and information are dangerous because of their two types. In the first one, it is entirely fake, and people can guess that it is fake, but the other one is complicated in which you can’t guess or make sure that up to what extent the news is fake, and for this Google’s initiative will surely going to help people, as we all are dependent on Google search engine up to 90 percent. If the other social media tools also focus on making better tools and create an anti-fake environment for the users, that will surely go to make the digital world safe, secure, and authentic.

Meta Data – The effect of fake news on the search engine is creating problems for the digital space. Google came up with a cool initiative for the problem, know more with us.
