Recent statistical data has suggested that the total number of passwords currently working on the internet is nearly close to forty times the earth’s total population. The mathematical number is around 300 billion, and while the number seems massive, there are other factors intrinsic to it that need much closer attention.

However, several cyber experts have pointed out the fact that the more passwords we conjure up on a daily basis, the more cyber threat we pose to our data.
A firm established in the United States called “RiskBased Security” dealing with security breaches and other cyber intelligence factors had revealed that till June of last year itself, experts saw a gigantic increase in the total number of security breaches reported worldwide, and the firm even reports that cyberattacks exfiltrated at least 36 billion records.
Well, then you may wonder and ask, how to troubleshoot this? You might be disappointed to know that the answers are not straightforward. It might get frustrating, but passwords are likely to increase, and security breaches are likely to happen. There are so many people on the internet complaining about something called “Password Fatigue,” but, deep down, they know they are not left with much of a choice. Passwords are as important in the digital world as locking the door every time you step out of the house. They guard your data and keep intruders at bay. But, more than that, passwords give you ownership of your digital asset, which could be anything ranging from a bank account, email id, to even a bitcoin.
So, what’s wrong with passwords?
For the firsts, humans mess up a password because of their negligent and carefree behavior. We use passwords for critical tasks such as online transactions, money transfer, or we even use them to perform some leisure activities such as checking our social media accounts or watching an online movie, but while going through our daily prosaic tasks, we often overlook the fact that how crucial it is to secure ourselves. Are passwords going out of existence? Well, for some time, passwords gave them a sense of security and peace of mind that their assets are safe. Some theorists are even suggesting that passwords will inevitably disappear by “slow death.” So, what does it mean, then? Will biometrics take over? Many secure sites and agencies have already opted for biometrics as it is more sophisticated, secure, and harder to break down. However, nothing suggests that biometrics, too, of choice wouldn’t face the same fate someday in the future. Well, there is hardly any prognosticator that can accurately predict the forthcoming future of the technology, but the battle between cyber attackers and security advocates is surely on.
